The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) is appalled by the recent escalations in violence perpetrated by Israel against civilians in Gaza and Lebanon, as detailed in recent reports. This continuation of aggression is unacceptable, and the time for passive international responses has long passed.
Despite the clear and documented atrocities committed, including the killing of dozens in recent strikes as per the latest coverage, the global reaction, particularly from Australia, has been tepid and wholly inadequate. Words of concern without action are meaningless when lives are being lost and human rights are being blatantly violated daily.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “The stark escalation in violence that we are witnessing is not only tragic but also a clear violation of every precept of international justice. It is incumbent upon nations that stand for peace and equity, like Australia, to take a stand against such blatant acts of aggression.”
AFIC urgently calls on the Australian Government to implement immediate and effective measures against Israel. It is imperative that our leaders go beyond mere diplomatic caution and take bold steps to end this violence. “Our tolerance for diplomatic subtleties is exhausted. The time for decisive action is now. Australia must no longer be a bystander in the face of such glaring injustice,” added Dr. Jneid. “We must show that the principles of democracy, human rights, and international law are not just theoretical concepts but standards we are committed to upholding.”
AFIC demands the imposition of sanctions on Israel, the expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador, and a clear and public denouncement of these acts of aggression. Our government must stand firm against these grave injustices and uphold international law and human rights.
The Australian Muslim community, alongside various global observers, sees the current situation not just as a regional conflict but as a test of our nation’s commitment to justice and morality on the world stage. Australia’s failure to act decisively now makes us complicit in these continuing war crimes.
We can no longer afford to stand by while innocent lives are systematically destroyed. Australia must use its international standing to push for an immediate cessation of hostilities and to ensure accountability for those responsible for these heinous acts.
AFIC calls on the Australian Government to leverage its international relations and take a leadership role in advocating for an immediate end to the hostilities and ensuring accountability for those responsible for the atrocities.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
