The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) unequivocally condemns the disturbing online threat directed towards the Australian Islamic House – Masjid Al-Bayt Al-Islami. This threat, mimicking the language of the horrific Christchurch attack, highlights the persistent danger faced by our communities, particularly during Ramadan, when mosques are filled nightly with worshippers.
This incident occurs not only during our holy month but alarmingly ahead of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, underscoring a concerning rise in anti-Muslim sentiments. Furthermore, it coincides with new legislation aimed at combating hate speech based on race but not religion, effectively excluding Muslims from protection against religiously motivated hate crimes.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “This threat is not an isolated incident but part of an escalating pattern of attacks on the Muslim community. This is not just another act of ‘racism’ to be overlooked and forgotten but a serious wake-up call demanding immediate and strong responses from all sectors of society.”
AFIC calls for a robust and unequivocal response from law enforcement and government officials. We urge for the threat to be treated with the gravity it deserves, ensuring rigorous investigation and prosecution of those responsible. Additionally, we implore the Australian government to recognise and rectify the gaps in current hate crime legislation, providing inclusive protection that covers religious identity.
“We stand at a crucial juncture where the choices we make in responding to such threats will define our society’s fabric” added Dr. Jneid. “It is imperative that we strengthen our resolve against hate and work collectively to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all Australians, irrespective of their faith.”
AFIC remains committed to working with authorities, community leaders, and all Australians to foster peace, understanding, and security. We reaffirm our dedication to combating all forms of discrimination and violence, ensuring that such acts of hate find no shelter in our diverse society.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
