The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) is deeply alarmed by the continuing trend of physical assaults against members of the Muslim community across Australia. Most recently, a shocking incident occurred at Epping Plaza in Melbourne, where a Muslim woman was assaulted simply while on her lunch break. This violent act is part of an increasing pattern of hostility, including the harrowing incidents at a Sydney K-Mart, where a Muslim woman and her daughter were verbally attacked and the attempted hit and run of a senior Muslim religious leader.
AFIC President, Dr. Rateb Jneid, expressed his grave concern over these incidents, stating, “These attacks are not isolated but indicative of a growing trend of Islamophobic violence that must be addressed immediately. The physical security of Australian Muslims is being threatened on an almost daily basis, yet the response from authorities and political leaders remains grossly insufficient.”
Dr. Jneid further added, “When compared to the swift and significant attention given to less severe incidents affecting other communities, the disparity in response is not only apparent but also unacceptable. All Australians deserve to feel safe and protected by their government and local authorities.”
AFIC is calling on law enforcement and government officials at all levels to take immediate and decisive actions to address this escalating trend. It is imperative that these acts of violence are not only condemned but also met with rigorous investigative processes and that perpetrators are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
Moreover, AFIC demands that more substantial measures are put in place to prevent such attacks and to ensure that the Muslim community can live without fear of being targeted for their faith. It is the responsibility of all sectors of government to foster an environment where cultural diversity is embraced and protected.
We urge community members to remain vigilant and to report any incidents of harassment or violence to the authorities. AFIC stands ready to assist any affected individuals and to advocate tirelessly for the safety and rights of all Muslims in Australia.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
