The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) cautiously welcomes the tentative ceasefire agreement in Gaza, as reported by reliable sources. While any move towards peace is a positive step, the devastation that has unfolded over the past 15 months cannot be understated nor forgotten.

This ceasefire echoes a proposal that was on the table in May 2024—a deal that was initially rejected by Israel. Since then, the Palestinian people have suffered immensely, with more than 50,000 lives lost. AFIC President, Dr. Rateb Jneid, states, “How many more innocent lives could have been spared had this agreement been accepted earlier? This delay has been catastrophic, and we must not allow these lives to have been lost in vain.”

As discussions of aid and reconstruction of Gaza commence, it is imperative to recognise that without a genuine resolution to the oppression of the Palestinian people, these efforts are insufficient. “The proposed aid must go beyond rebuilding infrastructure, it must rebuild lives and communities under the promise of lasting peace and justice,” says Dr. Jneid.

Furthermore, the international community must remain vigilant. The ceasefire must serve as a catalyst for real change, ensuring Palestinian self-determination and holding those accountable for the war crimes committed. Dr. Jneid adds, “We urge the world not to turn its back on Gaza again. The Palestinian people deserve a future crafted by their own hands, free from oppression.”

This moment in history presents an opportunity for genuine change. AFIC calls on the global community, including the Australian government, to support a process that not only addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also paves the way for a sustainable and just resolution for the Palestinian people.

AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
