The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) expresses its profound dismay and unequivocal condemnation of the Australian Government’s decision to send the Attorney General to Israel in an effort to mend bilateral relations. This action is particularly grievous as it comes at a time when numerous international human rights organisations and United Nations entities have accused Israel of engaging in genocidal practices against the Palestinian people.
The role of the Attorney General, Australia’s foremost legal officer, is to uphold the nation’s commitments to international law, including the Rome Statute and the Genocide Convention. It is, therefore, not only inappropriate but deeply concerning that this high office is being used to foster relations with a state accused of the gravest human rights violations.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated: “Sending our Attorney General to Israel under these circumstances is not only a misstep; it is a betrayal of the values Australia stands for on the global stage. How can we claim to support human rights and justice when we seek to bolster ties with a government that is actively engaged in policies amounting to genocide?”
AFIC demands that this visit be cancelled and calls on the Australian Government to instead take decisive actions consistent with its international legal obligations. We urge the government to:
- Implement economic and diplomatic sanctions against Israel until it complies with international human rights standards and ceases its violent actions against the Palestinian people.
- Support international efforts to hold Israeli leaders accountable through the International Criminal Court and other relevant international institutions.
This is not a time for diplomatic gestures of friendship but a moment to take a principled stand for justice and human rights. The Australian government must prioritise its commitment to these universal principles over any bilateral relations.
Dr. Jneid adds: “The people of Australia, and indeed the world, expect our leaders to act with moral clarity and courage. The Australian government’s current course undermines these expectations and contributes to the suffering of the Palestinian people. We must change course and act justly.”
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
