The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) acknowledges the significant developments in Syria, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history. After more than a decade of conflict amid the sustained oppression of the Syrian people, the fall of the Assad regime represents an important shift, opening possibilities for peace and rehabilitation.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “We view the recent changes in Syria with a sense of optimism. The Syrian people have endured immense suffering, loss, and displacement over the years of the Assad dynasty. This moment, therefore, brings a critical opportunity for healing and rebuilding the nation.”
The conflict in Syria has had devastating consequences, with countless lives lost and millions displaced. The emergence of individuals from Assad’s prisons has been a poignant reminder of the deep scars left by this conflict. AFIC stands in solidarity with the Syrian people and supports their aspirations for a future marked by peace, justice, and stability.
Dr. Jneid added, “We pray that this new phase in Syria’s history will lead to genuine reconciliation and a steadfast recovery. It is essential that the international community, including Australia, support Syria in its efforts to rebuild and ensure that all Syrians, regardless of their political affiliations or beliefs, can live in safety and dignity.”
AFIC hopes that the transition in leadership will be anchored in the principles of fairness and respect for human rights, guided by the enduring values of Islam which call for justice and compassion. We advocate for the global community to respect the sovereignty of the Syrian people, allowing them the space to shape their own future. It is crucial that this process embraces an inclusive framework that accommodates the needs of all Syrian citizens, fostering a society where diverse groups can coexist peacefully and contribute to the nation’s prosperity.
“We hope to see Syria thrive as a country where all citizens can contribute to its development and where peace is a reality for everyone,” concluded Dr. Jneid.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
