The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) welcomes Australia’s recent affirmative vote at the United Nations to support the resolution demanding an end to Israeli occupation in Palestine. This vote marks a significant return to Australia’s pre-2001 stance, aligning once again with most of the global community on a morally and legally essential issue.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “Australia’s decision to back the UN resolution reflects a commendable return to its historical commitment to justice and international norms concerning Palestine. We are encouraged by this move, which resonates with the values of a significant majority of nations worldwide.”
However, AFIC also expresses its disappointment regarding Australia’s abstention from a related resolution relating to resources given to an office for Palestinian rights within the UN which would have put further pressure on Israel to cease its occupation and discriminatory practices against Palestinians. “While the positive vote is a step in the right direction, the abstention from the subsequent resolution is a missed opportunity to fully align with international consensus and justice for Palestine,” Dr. Jneid added.
AFIC urges the Australian government to not only maintain but also to enhance its stance on the Palestinian issue by adopting more tangible actions that could lead to meaningful change. These actions should aim at pressuring Israel to end its prolonged occupation and the systematic ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.
“As the global community moves forward, Australia must not find itself out of step but should lead in advocating for peace and human rights. It is crucial that we support all efforts that aim to restore peace and ensure justice for the people of Palestine,” concluded Dr. Jneid.
AFIC remains committed to advocating for the rights and dignity of Palestinian people and calls on the Australian government to reaffirm its position on the international stage by supporting all efforts aimed at ending the occupation and ensuring peace and stability in the region.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
