The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) welcomes Australia’s vote, today, in favor of two significant United Nations resolutions calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and urging Israel to reverse its ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). This marks a positive step, aligning Australia with the global consensus on these critical issues.

Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “While we commend the Australian government for supporting these resolutions, it is essential to recognise that without accompanying actionable measures, such resolutions remain largely symbolic. The real test of commitment will be in the implementation of concrete actions to hold Israel accountable for its continued violations.”

The resolutions, which are non-binding, reflect the international community’s growing concern over the crises in Gaza and the obstructive measures against UNRWA. However, AFIC emphasises that mere voting alignment is insufficient if not supported by decisive actions that can lead to real change on the ground.

Dr. Jneid added, “Australia’s voice at the UN is crucial, but it must go beyond voting. We urge the Australian government to advance beyond rhetoric by implementing tangible actions, such as sanctions and diplomatic pressures, against Israel to ensure compliance with international law and human rights standards.”

AFIC calls on the Australian government to take a leadership role in advocating for peace and justice in the Middle East. This includes supporting international efforts to enforce the resolutions and taking a stand against any actions that undermine peace processes or prolong suffering.

“As Australians, we have a moral obligation to ensure our international engagements reflect our commitment to human rights and justice. It is time for our actions to match our votes at the United Nations,” concluded Dr. Jneid.

AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
