The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) is issuing an urgent call to address the alarming rise in Islamophobic incidents across Australia, which undermines the social cohesion and fabric of our diverse society. Recent events, including graffiti attacks and the arson of a bus, have not only shocked our community but have also been met with a concerning silence from our nation’s leaders.

Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “The absence of public condemnation from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in response to these hate crimes is deeply troubling. It raises a critical question: Are not all Australians, including the Muslims, deserving of their leaders’ attention and protection?”

Recent reports and incidents highlight a surge in Islamophobia, which some political figures and sections of the media either deny or minimise. This denial does not erase the fear and hurt felt by Muslim Australians; it merely exacerbates it. The role of our elected officials is to represent and protect all constituents, not just select groups.

Dr. Jneid added, “When political leaders choose to ignore the targeted harassment of Muslim Australians, they send a message that some Australians are less worthy of safety and respect than others. This is unacceptable and contrary to the values of equality and justice that Australia stands for.”

AFIC demands immediate and decisive action from all political parties to acknowledge and address the rising tide of Islamophobia. We call for:

  1. Public condemnations of all acts of Islamophobia by our political leaders.
  2. Implementation of more robust policies to combat hate speech and promote inclusivity.
  3. Support for educational programs that foster understanding and respect among diverse communities.

“It is time for more than just words; it is time for tangible actions that demonstrate a commitment to all Australians’ dignity and safety,” concluded Dr. Jneid.

AFIC stands ready to work with the government, law enforcement, and community leaders to combat this growing threat. Together, we can build a truly cohesive society where no individual lives in fear due to their faith or background.

AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
