The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) strongly supports the representative legal action taken by Birchgrove Legal against Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, following his recent remarks in the context of the ongoing crisis in Gaza and Lebanon.
This year marks a continued period of severe conflict affecting the Palestinian and Lebanese people, with thousands suffering due to ongoing violence and breaches of international law by Israel. In such times, it is deeply concerning that Mr. Dutton’s rhetoric has escalated to a level that may incite further division and hatred. His characterisation of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) lawful actions as “anti-Semitic” and his calls to sever ties with the ICC are not only unfounded but also undermine the principles of justice and accountability on the global stage.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “We fully support Birchgrove Legal’s efforts to challenge the harmful narratives being advanced by Mr. Dutton. His statements risk legitimising atrocity denial and could potentially contribute to racial discrimination. It is imperative that our leaders reflect principles of fairness, justice, and respect for international law.”
AFIC is alarmed by the lack of accountability for actions that have perpetuated the suffering of innocent civilians in Gaza and Lebanon. We urge the Australian government and opposition leaders to uphold the values of human dignity and justice for all, particularly for those who are most vulnerable.
As the case progresses, AFIC reaffirms its commitment to supporting the voices of the Palestinian and Lebanese communities and all efforts aimed at fostering a fair and just resolution to their plight.
“We call on all political leaders in Australia to reflect on their responsibility to promote peace and justice, not just locally but globally, and to act in ways that truly represent the moral and ethical standards Australians hold dear,” added Dr. Jneid.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
