The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) acknowledges reports of a ceasefire in Lebanon as a step toward peace, yet remains deeply concerned about the devastation left in its wake and the continuing conflict in Gaza. The ceasefire, while a necessary relief, brings little solace to the thousands of Lebanese families mourning the nearly 5,000 lives lost and the widespread destruction of their country’s infrastructure.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “While we welcome the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, this ceasefire must not be an endpoint but a precedent for immediate peace efforts in Gaza. The international community cannot allow Israel to continue its aggressive actions without consequence. Nearly a year of continuous conflict and the loss of countless lives demand unequivocal action.”
AFIC demands an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and insists on the urgent need for Israel to be held accountable for the atrocities committed in both Lebanon and Gaza. It is imperative that the global community, including Australia, not only support cessation of hostilities but also engage actively in seeking justice for the victims of these conflicts.
“Justice for the people of Lebanon and Gaza cannot merely be theoretical. It must come with real actions that hold perpetrators accountable and prevent future aggressions,” added Dr. Jneid.
AFIC calls on the Australian government and international bodies to take a firm stance against the ongoing violence and to support investigations and sanctions that hold the Israeli government accountable for violations of international law. This includes extending the ceasefire to Gaza and ensuring that peace efforts are not selective but inclusive of all affected regions.
As a voice for the Muslim community in Australia, AFIC continues to stand in solidarity with the people of Lebanon and Gaza, advocating for their rights to safety, peace, and justice.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
