The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) welcomes the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing allegations of war crimes. This historic move by the ICC complements the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) findings that Israel is likely committing acts that amount to genocide against the Palestinian people.

Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “This bold step by the ICC is a significant step toward accountability for the atrocities committed in Palestine. For too long, the international community has witnessed severe violations of human rights and international law in Gaza and the West Bank without adequate response. It is imperative that all nations, including Australia, uphold the rule of law by recognising the jurisdiction of the ICC and ensuring the enforcement of these warrants.”

The issuance of these warrants follows a series of damning verdicts from the ICJ, which not only accused Israel of plausible genocide but also ordered the state to comply with international laws designed to protect civilian lives and maintain global peace. These judicial pronouncements underscore the urgency of the international legal system in addressing these grave concerns.

AFIC urges the Australian Government to affirm its commitment to international justice by acknowledging the ICC’s jurisdiction and by actively participating in the enforcement of these arrest warrants. Furthermore, AFIC reiterates its call for the Australian Government to take immediate, tangible actions against Israel, including:

• Imposing economic sanctions on Israel.
• Suspending all military and defense collaborations.
• Supporting international efforts to establish peace and security in the region.

Dr. Jneid emphasised, “Australia’s stance at this critical juncture will determine its legacy on the global stage. We must stand on the right side of history by supporting efforts to bring those accused of heinous crimes to justice. Our actions now can pave the way for lasting peace and justice in the Middle East.”

AFIC remains committed to advocating for the rights of Palestinians and upholding the principles of justice and humanity. We call on the international community, human rights organisations, and all peace-loving nations to support the enforcement of the ICC’s mandates.

AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
