The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) strongly condemns the recent escalation of violence in the Middle East, which has seen devastating attacks extending beyond Gaza into Lebanon. Recent reports indicate a severe increase in hostilities, including mass pager explosions in Lebanon, that have resulted in deaths and extensive casualties, further destabilising the region.
Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC, stated, “We are witnessing an alarming escalation that not only perpetuates the suffering of the Palestinian people but also threatens the stability of the entire region. The recent attacks in Lebanon, where thousands have been injured due to explosions triggered by pagers, mark a dangerous expansion of conflict that must be addressed by the international community immediately.”
The conflict in Gaza continues to exact a harrowing toll, with over 41,118 Palestinians killed, 95,125 wounded, and 11,000 missing. The recent expansion of military operations into Lebanon only exacerbates an already dire humanitarian crisis.
“In these critical times, it is more important than ever for international actors to intervene and halt these aggressions. The ongoing violence undermines all efforts towards peace and stability in the region,” added Dr. Jneid. “We urge immediate ceasefire and call on global leaders to facilitate dialogue that respects the rights and dignity of all people affected by these conflicts.”
AFIC extends its deepest sympathies to all victims of the recent attacks and stands in solidarity with the communities ravaged by this prolonged conflict. “We must not become desensitised to the suffering caused by this conflict. Instead, we should strengthen our resolve to advocate for peace and justice,” Dr. Jneid emphasised.
AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
