The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) recognises the significant steps taken by Bangladesh in forming an interim government, aimed at addressing recent challenges and advancing the nation towards greater stability and inclusivity. This development is a hopeful sign for the future of Bangladesh, particularly in its efforts to safeguard the rights and welfare of all its citizens, including minority communities. This needs to be reflective of modern Bangladesh, inclusive and free from interference.

Recent reports have detailed the new government’s commitment to resolving incidents of violence and discrimination that have arisen from complex political dynamics rather than ethnic or religious motivations. “We are encouraged by the proactive stance of the Bangladeshi interim government to foster reconciliation and protect the vulnerable,” stated Dr. Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC. “This is a pivotal moment for Bangladesh to strengthen its national fabric and ensure that no community is left behind.”

AFIC is cautiously optimistic about the potential for these changes to bring about lasting peace and equitable progress. “The formation of this government could mark a new chapter in Bangladesh’s history, one where unity and peace prevail over division,” Dr. Jneid added. “We extend our heartfelt well wishes to the people of Bangladesh as they navigate this crucial transition.”

We stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and support the government’s initiatives to unite and stabilise the country. AFIC remains hopeful and looks forward to Bangladesh emerging as a model of resilience and unity in the face of adversity.

AFIC, established in 1964, stands as the Peak Muslim Organisation in Australia, with 170 members including 9 State and Territory Councils. It has a rich history of pioneering numerous community services and actively advocating for the rights and representation of the Muslim community.
