The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) extends its sincere appreciation to Senator David Pocock for his public support in the ongoing case brought by South Africa at the International Criminal Court (ICC) of Justice made on 11 January 2024.

During a disproportionately destructive response that continues to claim lives, AFIC recognizes the significance of Senator Pocock’s advocacy for a rules-based approach through the international legal system. The organization sees the ICC as a potential avenue for the triumph of law over conflict and a platform to bring forth structured, fact-based discussions that may contribute to the accountability of all parties involved.

President Dr Rateb Jneid expresses eagerness in connecting with Senator David Pocock to explore collaborative opportunities further. AFIC looks forward to fostering dialogue and cooperation in pursuit of a peaceful resolution.

AFIC has consistently championed the deployment of observers to gather accurate information on the ground. We maintain the position that Australia should be prepared to send peacekeepers to protect civilians. AFIC calls on the release of all hostages and individuals held without charge, underlining a steadfast commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Established in 1964, AFIC stands as the peak Muslim organisation, boasting State Councils in every state and over 150 members. Throughout its history, AFIC has been at the forefront of pioneering various community services, solidifying its role as an active peak organisation.
